Sites and Monuments
The historical heritage of Chalons-en-Champagne is rich in sites and monuments. Do not miss on visiting the famous monuments such as the Collegiate Church Notre-Dame-en-Vaux, the Halles Market and the “Porte Sainte-Croix”. Then take some time to explore the area including the sites marked by the Great War.
Sites et monuments
This neo-gothic temple was built in 1880 by Gosset, according to the maps of Louis Gillet, architect from the region. It is located just across the synagogue. Above the door is written the verse of Isaiah 40.8: "The word of our God stands forever. "
The Saint Jean church is one of the oldest in Chalons-en-Champagne. Built in the 11th century to the 17th century, it allows to follow the evolution of the architecture of the Romanesque to the Renaissance art. The construction of the nave seems to go back to the last quarter of the 11th century.
Nécropole Nationale "La Ferme de Suippes"
More than 9,000 fighters killed during the two world wars, mainly at the battles of Champagne are found in the French military cemetery "La Ferme de Suippes", created in 1932. An ossuary contains the bodies of 528 French soldiers.
Les villages détruits
Military camps of Moronvilliers and Suippes contain 7 destroyed villages: Moronvillers, auroy, Ripont, Tahure Perthes-les-Hurlus, Hurlus and the Mesnil-les-Hurlus. The last 5 still have moving testimonies, mostly of their church and cemetery. Churches stones of each of the destroyed villages can be found on the slope of the Church of Sommepy-Tahure.
Monument de Navarin
This monument was erected in 1924 to honor the death of Champagne Armies, on the initiative of General Gouraud. Up a few steps, we discover a vast panorama of the former Champagne front. The land still bears the marks of the fighting: trenches, craters, hoses ... Inside, 10,000 soldiers bones rest in a burial crypt.
Chapelle orthodoxe et cimetière russe
The Chapel was built on the road to Aubérive through fundraising by the Association of Remembrance of the Expeditionary Russian Army. It houses a small Orthodox cemetery. Under the Roman cross of the military cemetery are buried a thousand Russian soldiers who came to fight on the French front in 1916.
Château de Pierry
Discover the Château de Pierry, a magnificent heritage from the 18th century, in the heart of the Champagne region, only 35 minutes far from Châlons-en-Champagne. Visit with explanatory booklet and map of the domain during which you will have access to the whole property. You will go through the Champagne granary, the small private apartments, the reception rooms, the Galerie des Rois with its permanent exhibition of the kings of France and the Champagne Dynasties; then the English garden, the cellar-press, the 18th century cellars, the vats room and the cellars of the Château on the theme of the evolution of manual machinery from 1750 to 1950. Monument Américain du Blanc Mont
Former German observatory, the Mont Blanc-site saw over 6000 Americans soldiers falling. A monument was erected by the US government in the 1920s on the fighting site. At the top of the monument, a beautiful view of the surrounding area and viewing tables allow to observe the configuration of the battlefield, the remains of trenches as well as villages and other places around.
