With the Association FURIES, national hub of circus and street arts, the National Centre of Circus Art that took up residence in Châlons-en-Champagne thirty years ago, and a concrete block building circus -it remains only seven in France-, our city can boast about being the capital of circus arts. A frankly quirky and modern circus.
Circus events in Châlons-en-Champagne :
In December, the graduation show for final examination of the National Centre of Circus Art
Each year, a renowned stage director is chosen to work on an artistic creation with students of the graduating class.
This show, technically and artistically accomplished, highlights the personalities and performances of these talents of tomorrow.
It is presented during the first half of December in Châlons-en-Champagne before embarking on a national tour, even international.
In June, FURIES, circus and street art festival
Each year in June, the center of Châlons-en-Champagne is transformed into a kind of giant circus tent. The city becomes a space where everything is possible and the scene of burlesque and unexpected performances. The troupes invite themselves in gardens, on a square, under a circus tent, at the corner of a street, at the National Centre of Circus Art, at the theater Comète, at the Rive Gauche arena… Since the first edition in 1990, the festival has stayed true to its objective of support to contemporary art and discovering young talents.
Furies also offers a “circus season” with multiple appointments with the ambition to become national hub of circus and street arts. Download the full program of the 2015-16 season by clicking here.
The circus: an element of Chalons Heritage
Chalons is one of the few towns in France to have a concrete block building circus. Indeed, it remains only seven! Built in 1898-1899 according to the plans of Louis Gillet, this 12 faces polygon made of reinforced concrete holds a notable carved portal.
